Geometric
Software Solutions and SolidWorks extend eDrawings to multiple CAD platforms
BOMBAY, India, Nov. 12, 2003 - Geometric
Software Solutions (GEOMETRIC) and SolidWorks Corporation
today unveiled a new program to improve engineers' design
collaboration and reduce time to market. The companies will
extend SolidWorks® eDrawings - a tool that enables users
to review and comment on product designs via e-mail - to multiple
computer-aided design (CAD) platforms. SolidWorks customers
constantly use eDrawings because it provides a level of communication
that solves an industry-wide interoperability problem engineers
face daily: manually translating incompatible design data
from customers, suppliers, and even team members using different
CAD systems.
Manual design translation increases the risk of errors and
slows design approval, manufacturing, and product delivery.
AutoCAD
users already minimize some of these risks because they
can view and publish 2D files natively in eDrawings. To further
reduce communication challenges, GEOMETRIC will develop and
provide eDrawings plug-ins for other CAD platforms.
These plug-ins will allow engineers using different CAD software
programs to generate eDrawings files that users can rotate
and view from any angle with eDrawings Viewer. The plug-ins
are free to those using the eDrawings Viewer, and available
on a subscription basis to engineers who want to mark up product
designs using eDrawings Professional. Product designers can
download the Pro/ENGINEER®
plug-in, the first in the series for multiple CAD platforms,
from GEOMETRIC's Web site at http://www.geometricsoftware.com/edrawings/proe.
"eDrawings has become an indispensable tool in most of our
customers' product development cycles," said John McEleney,
CEO of SolidWorks. "Hundreds of thousands of people around
the world use eDrawings to streamline design review and approval.
Together, SolidWorks and GEOMETRIC will extend eDrawings as
the worldwide standard for sharing 3D designs by making it
available to other popular CAD platforms so that file compatibility
is no longer an issue in collaboration."
SolidWorks 3D mechanical design software users rely on eDrawings
to communicate 3D designs and 2D drawings. eDrawings allows
engineers to e-mail product designs to customers, suppliers,
and other team members. The software is embedded in the eDrawing,
so recipients aren't forced to purchase additional software.
"Our mission is to extend the same superior experience SolidWorks
users have enjoyed with eDrawings to engineers working with
other CAD platforms. Doing so facilitates seamless communication
and collaboration for users of multiple systems," said Manu
Parpia, managing director of GEOMETRIC. "We are pleased to
partner with SolidWorks to bring this solution to Pro/ENGINEER
users at the outset."
Pricing and availability
The Pro/ENGINEER
plug-in for the eDrawings Viewer is free. A subscription
license of eDrawings Professional for Pro/ENGINEER can be
purchased for $995 USD (with a $195 annual subscription after
the first year). Pre-release versions for both plug-ins are
immediately available from GEOMETRIC's Web site at http://www.geometricsoftware.com/edrawings/proe.
The shipping versions for both products will be available
by the end of the year.
